Wind mitigation inspections (windstorm mitigation inspections) are done to determine whether a property is able to withstand specific weather anomalies, such as hurricanes or major wind events. The inspection will focus on several features of a home. This would include door and window coverings, the way the roof attaches to the walls of the home, and water sealing of the roof to prevent water from leaking into the home. Homeowner’s insurance companies in Florida provide substantial discounts to homeowners that get this inspection completed.

The main goal for this inspection is to determine the probability of your home’s ability to withstand damage from a major wind event. With hurricanes and other Florida weather, the likelihood for major property loss due to wind is a big deal. Having the right wind mitigation features on your home could be the difference between coming through the storms with an intact home and complete property loss. The following is a list of building features that will be looked for during a wind mitigation inspection:

  • Shingles or other roof coverings and if they meet Florida building requirements.
  • How the roof decking has been installed including fasteners and spacing.
  • Are there clips or straps in place to secure the roof to the supporting structure?
  • Is there a secondary water resistant barrier to prevent leaks in the event of a loss of shingles during a windstorm?
  •  Is the garage door wind rated?
  • What is the rating of the windows or glass doors (impact resistant glazing)? Is there full or partial protection of windows and glass doors?
  • Do all other openings, including doors and attic vents have protection?

Florida homeowners can get as high as a 30% premium discount or credits towards your windstorm premium for having more wind restrictive construction on their homes. Getting a wind mitigation inspection is the way to get this information to your insurance provider so you can get your discount.

Upon completion of the inspection, the inspector should offer you suggestions that can improve your home’s ability to come through a storm. It’s up to the homeowner if you wish to make the suggested changes to your home or to just submit the current report to your insurance company. You will see the most savings or credits by completing any suggested repairs or upgrades. Completing any repairs will add value to your home and make it more safe and secure. Always be sure to use licensed contractors to do any of these repairs to your home.

If you are not sure if you have ever had a wind mitigation inspection completed, you should be able to review your policy to see if you have any current windstorm credits. A wind mitigation report should be completed every five (5) years. If you have not had one done, or you need a new inspection, please give us a call at [Marchese Home Inspection.]
